Yes, yes....steer this thing toward St. Clair Shores. It's time to see the wizard. Add no cutting to black to the technical restrictions (it's a comfort thing for Liss), and add the comedy thing as well, he needs to try and make the video funny. Filters are you listening. Have him make a pilgramage to the lab. Make him go WEST, thru Canada, enter thru Port Huron, head south to St. Clair Shores. HE's already missed enough, because this man is already so busy. GEt him there by the end of the 7...FILTERS, get him there. I haven't chimed in that much, but finding Liss in Niagra Falls, as the first installment of this trip, it's already fated. A similar pilgrimage has already happened, and this is in reverse. It's a quick jump through Canada to Detroit, with endless possibilities once he's there. Have him spend a night in a shrine ranch house in St. Clair Shores, save him some money, for lodging, and then have him walk around downtown Detroit on some afternoon...show us the arm-pit of America, and engage people with yourself and the camera between you. By the end of this thing, Liss needs to talk to someone, and have them talk to him, with the camera running between, there should be a 7 person minimum. If this never happens, then Liss got off easy.
The only way for Liss to show the armpit of America is for him to go to Gary Indiana ;) Even though Daniel may hunt me down for this, I agree with Mr Nelson. Put him in front of the lense and not behind the camera. No tricks...no effects...no disguise. Raw Liss exposed to the world. I really hope that whatever pre-planned course that whomever decided was gospel can be altered with our comments. If not, what was/is the point? - David Howell
David, I didn't actually mean for Liss to be in front of the camera, though that would be interesting. I only meant for him to engage people with the camera between. He never does this, so I imagine it's uncomfortable for him. - Nelson
Ok...I see where you are coming from. I have seen 1 video where he did engage in conversation with another. The one that comes to mind was him in the car with his father going to the airport to pick up his sister. It was quite enjoyable to hear him interact. Given that he doesnt do much of this, you are quite possibly correct in that it may be uncomfortable for him. - David
Sorry Guys, but I disagree with putting Dan in front of the lens. We have plenty of talking heads out there in the world; let Dan continue to capture images that create the art that is Pouringdown. I don’t think engaging people on camera are difficult for Dan (since that is what he dose for a living). But if he finds a character that is worth engaging let him. – Mr. Performance
Yes. Portrait of The Prof. making a Human Dog episode. Behind the window!- Will
I was under the impression that the locations were to be chosen at the beginning of the 7 days (time needed to book transportation, lodging, etc.)? The filters picked the locations and lodging/transportation had to be picked slightly ahead of time. - Devlon
"I really hope that whatever pre-planned course that whomever decided was gospel can be altered with our comments. If not, what was/is the point? - David Howell". ************Two Points. One: I don't know where you got the impression that everything was set in stone and that there was a sevenmaps "gospel" that Daniel must adhere to. It the second time you've mentioned it. Do you know something I don't? Now, ideas such as Daniel appearing before the camera and/or interviewing strangers etc. came up repeatedly by contributors to the wiki. They're good ones. 'Nuff said. Two: What's the point? Well, the point was to take everyone's suggestions and narrow them down into as cohesive a collection of tasks/restricitons as possible and then use the input from the community during the project to add and tweak and guide Daniel on his Journey. So start adding and tweaking and guiding, already! Yes--tickets and lodging had to be worked out in advance, it's true. But that shouldn't stop anyone from adding ideas for challenges along the way, but it's a simple fact that not all contributed ideas can be used. --B.
Q: Do I know something that you dont? A: Maybe
Plane/Bus/Train tickets and hotel accomodations can all be purchased the day of travel. Yes...cost does become a factor with plane tickets however prepurchasing everything in advance sets in stone the course that Daniel travels. I havent heard anything yet from anyone that would leave room to alter this course.
You tell us to start adding, guiding and tweaking. I thought that's what we were doing by adding these comments? No one is asking for every single idea to be used though.
My understanding from the About page on the SevenMaps site is that this was to be an interactive journey guided by us. What I am questioning is if we, the contributors, are being guided by the filters who have predetermined what is to happen. On the page "Places we want Daniel to go to", Niagara Falls was not once mentioned. Correct me if I am wrong however I dont think Niagara Falls was mentioned at all on any of the suggested ideas. Yet...Daniel is there...for 3 days even. Who's idea was this? How is this interactive when he is sent someplace no one suggested he go? - David
"Are the contributors being guided by the filters who have predetermined what is to happpen?" I'm still not sure what this means. Maybe I'm misunderstanding you. I haven't had coffee yet, so it's entirely possible. Or, you're actually repeating yourself for the third time about this filter/pre-planned/gospel hoohaa? Are the filters culling the ideas (both before and after the start of Daniel's trip) and attempting to work in as many as possible? Yes, definitely. The only reason there are people performing this task is so that Daniel doesn't have to deal with making choices between eating brains and attending Burning Man (those are random choices, by the way. I have nothing against either of those ideas--my point being that the man is asking to be challenged in order to save himself from taking the easy way out, therefore he shouldn be the one making the choices.) Nothing about the activites on the journey was predetermined. There was a basic outline that was fairly begging to be edited along the way. All is/was mutable and all is/has been mutated along the way with the exception of the cities where the train stopped (that would be the train that so many people wished to see Daniel travel by). Why all the tickets in advance? Time. Travel time can really cut into someone's day. When that someone is expected to film edit and post a video during his waking hours, you don't want his waking hours sucked up by excess travel...the kind that comes from not buying tickets in advance during the peak vacation season in America. Also: money. Always better to buy accomodations in advance. It was decided early on that Daniel should spend his time concentrating on the art and not the incidentals like locating hotels, squirreling out wi-fi, and scanning train schedules. Five people in varying time zones and varying access to computers cannot make these decisions all together on a daily basis, so that also figured into the minimal advance planning. Why Niagara? Niagara was the less-expensive second-cousin substitute for the various MTDs (Mainstream Tourist Destinations) that people were suggesting on the wiki. That's all. Hey, personally, I wanted to send the guy to Laos. You're right, this is the space for the guiding and the adding and the tweaking--and the sevenmaps page comments area is also a good spot...actually better--but, sorry, seems to me like what your doing here is more along the lines of nitpicking and bitching. ----B.
- I haven't participated much here for a few weeks, and I am sorry about that. However, I dont think this is the time for us to be discussing the hows and whys, and try to make conclusions as to what is wrong, and whose fault it is and why. Let's do that discussion after the maps have been delivered and we have let Daniel have some rest. For now, I think we should focus on the last two assignments. However, I must say that I think this project is in itself a big learning process for these kinds of projects, and I hope we as a community can learn these lessons. Everyone involved in seven maps have good will, we all want it to kick ass. But when different people have differently coloured eyeglasses, and we basically have a lot of cooks, things can get messy. The five filters - maybe the concept of the filters stifles the creativity somehow? Not because of something the filters do or do not do, but because they are there. I am not sure. I will check out the latest here on the wiki (so many pages!), and I hope we can have a grand finale! Take care, all. - Raymond
